Shifting from sodium vapour light to LED lights for streetlights could be a very effective way to save electricity bills.

Renewable energy expert Santi Pada Gon Chaudhuri said that LED has a number of advantages. "Initially, compared to Halogen or sodium vapour lights, LED did not use to give much light and the price was also much high. A one watt capacity LED panel used to cost about Rs 200 then. It was from 2000 onwards that LED price started to decrease and the first LED panel was used in Kolkata. A one watt LED panel can now be available for Rs 20. Another advantage of LED is that a 200 watt LED panel could be split into four 50 watt units," he said.

Gon Chaudhuri also added that normally, the life span of a LED panel is about 50,000 hours. Which means if a LED panel is operated for about eight to ten hours daily, it will last for about 12 years? Also, LED's efficiency level is much higher that sodium vapour lights and it emits double the light of a fluorescent light of the same watt.

"LED is definitely a good choice but there is only one matter that needs to be looked into, that is the standardisation of LED is yet to be done in India. Led manufacturing facilities is required in our country to maintain the standard," Gon Chaudhuri said, adding that a 200 watt LED panel along with all its required equipments to be used as a street light costs around Rs 8000.
