New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has installed 15 smart poles in Connaught Place as part of the Smart City initiative. Also, the civic body has fitted a bus stop at Shanti Path with solar panels as a pilot project.

The council plans to install 55 smart poles in Connaught Place and five other major roads under its jurisdiction. The poles are Wi-Fi enabled and have warm LED lights and air sensors to provide details about the air quality.

VK Gautam, director Press & Information NDMC said, "Tender has been floated for 40 more poles, which will come up at Janpath, Parliament Street, Sansad Marg etc., and across inner circle in Connaught Place."

For the past two years, NDMC has been planning to install these poles, but the project was stuck due to technical glitches. The council also plans to develop smart roads and bus stops, which will have solar panels.

Senior NDMC officials said the solar energy would be used by the power grid. "On a pilot basis, we have converted one bus stop into a smart one and after reviewing the progress will expand it further," said the official.

NDMC has converted a small portion into smart road by installing solar panels and the same would be replicated across New Delhi area, if the review is successful. "The roads will have solar panels fixed on the walking area and pavements will also be converted into smart ones under the Smart City project. The idea is to rely more on non-polluting ways of producing energy to save the environment," said the senior official.
