In a move to popularize energy-efficient lighting solutions in Uttarakhand households, chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat announced that one crore LED bulbs would be distributed to residents with the help of women self-help groups across the state. The bulbs and energy saving equipment will be sold at affordable rates.

The CM made the announcement at the Energy Conservation Day function organized by UREDA in the ONGC auditorium on Thursday.

Addressing the gathering, Rawat said, "By switching over to LED the government will save power consumption in a big way. For instance, with one crore LED bulbs the state will be able to save Rs 175 crore in power bills and this amount can be used for improvement of services in health and education sectors."

The government has decided to give a portion of money from the sales and a certificate of Urja Mitra to those meeting the target. The CM added that in case the state manages to meet its energy conservation target then the surplus power would be supplied free of cost to the weaker sections of society.

Speaking at the event, power secretary Radhika Jha said, "Energy conservation must not be a one-day affair. Everyone must bring a change in their lifestyle to conserve energy on a daily basis."
