Renewable Energy Agency Puducherry (REAP) bagged an award from the Central Government for promoting concentrated solar technology (CST). The agency’s managing director R. Smitha received the award from Union Minister for Coal, Energy and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal at a function held in Delhi recently.

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India (MNRE), is promoting concentrated Solar Technology (CST) for maximizing fossil fuel displacement in industrial heating, cooling process and community cooking.

CST technology can provide steam/hot oil/pressurised water between 90 degrees Celsius and 350 degrees Celsius for applications like community cooking, process heat, laundry and air-conditioning etc.

A small system of 100 sq. m. reflector area can save from 5,000 to 10, 000 litre/kg of fuel/oil/LPG per year. This technology can be integrated with conventional boilers for trouble-free operation during non-sunshine hours. Different technologies suitable for various applications are available. The cost can be recovered in a period of 3 to 5 years depending on sunshine, applications and fuels. Around 150 systems of various capacities are working all over India. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy provides 30% subsidy to all categories of beneficiaries.
