The State urgently needs pumped storage hydroelectric power plants that can reuse the water discharged from the hydroelectric projects to generate electricity, Governor P. Sathasivam has said.

Inaugurating a two-day national workshop on “Challenges and opportunities of pumped storage hydroelectric power plants” here on Monday, he said such plants can be set up using non-renewable sources like sun and wind. The sector needed innovative ideas from technical experts, he said, stressing the need for energy conservation. “We should take pride in conserving energy and natural resources,” the Governor added.

The brainstorming workshop would look into the different aspects of pumped storage hydroelectric power plants, Chairman and Managing Director of KSEB M. Shivasankar said.

Pumped storage hydroelectric power plants provide reliable, affordable, and grid-scale storage of energy at affordable rates. Practising engineers from various industries, researchers, students and faculty members from various institutions are attending the workshop being organised by the KSEB and the CET.
